In the first half of April 2026, four astronauts climbed aboard NASA’s Orion spacecraft and made history as the first humans to travel to the vicinity of the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. It was, by every measure, successful and the world watched.
But nobody watched the welding.
Nobody watched the thousands of hours of systems testing, the data integrity reviews, or the mission simulations run over and over until every failure scenario had been anticipated and addressed. Nobody celebrated the governance frameworks that determined who could authorize a go/no-go decision, or the infrastructure investments that made reliable communication between Earth and a spacecraft 230,000 miles away even possible. All of that work, unglamorous, painstaking, and absolutely essential, happened long before the rocket left the pad.
AI has its own launch day problem.
The Pressure to Launch
Right now, in organizations of every size and industry, a familiar conversation is playing out. Senior leaders, energized by what they’re reading, what they’re hearing at conferences, what their competitors appear to be doing, are turning to their teams and saying some version of: “We need to get AI into our processes. Now.”
That directive lands hardest on the people in the middle. The managers and team leads who understand both the excitement above them and the reality below them. They know what their data actually looks like. They know which systems don’t talk to each other. They know their teams are already stretched, already absorbing the last wave of change, and now being asked to ramp up on another technology, many times without clear goals, adequate resources, or a realistic timeline.
When senior leaders issue that directive, they’re often asking for an Artemis II launch without realizing it. The work required is enormous. And if expectations aren’t grounded in that reality from the start, the mission is already at risk.
What the Launchpad Actually Requires
NASA didn’t point at the moon and tell engineers to figure it out. They built the foundation first. Your AI initiative requires the same discipline, and it starts in four areas.
Data quality. AI systems are only as good as the data that feeds them. Garbage in, garbage out isn’t a new idea, but it’s a newly urgent one. Before your organization can expect meaningful output from any AI model, someone has to do the hard work of understanding what data you have, where it lives, whether it’s accurate, and whether it’s accessible. That work rarely makes it into a board presentation. But without it, your AI initiative is launching without life support.
Governance. NASA doesn’t launch without a formal review. There are defined checkpoints, clear accountability, and documented criteria for what “ready” looks like. Your AI program needs the same structure. Who decides which use cases to pursue? Who’s responsible for validating outputs? What happens when the model gets it wrong? Governance isn’t about slowing things down. It’s about making sure that when you do launch, you don’t have to abort the mission.
Infrastructure. The Artemis program relied on decades of investment in facilities, communication systems, and engineering capability before a single astronaut boarded Orion. Your AI initiative relies on APIs, data pipelines, and integration layers that may or may not be ready for what you’re asking of them. Skipping this step doesn’t eliminate the requirement. It just means you’ll discover the gap at the worst possible time.
Change management. NASA didn’t just build systems. They trained people. Extensively. Your teams need a similar investment. AI doesn’t deliver value by existing. It delivers value when people understand it, trust it, and know how to work with it. If your organization is asking people to change how they work without giving them the support, the training, and honestly the time to adapt, you’re not managing change. You’re just creating it.
A Message for Mission Control
If you’re one of the people in the middle of this, translating executive ambition into operational reality while supporting a team doing their best to keep up, you are Mission Control. The work you’re doing right now, the unglamorous, behind-the-scenes, foundational work, is what will determine whether your organization’s AI initiative succeeds or fails.
That deserves to be said clearly, because it often isn’t.
Push back when the timeline isn’t realistic. Ask for the resources the foundation requires. Name the gaps in data, governance, infrastructure, and change readiness before they become crises. The astronauts aboard Orion trusted Mission Control with their lives because Mission Control had done the work. Your teams deserve the same commitment from you.
The Moment Everyone Will Watch
There will be a moment, and it will come, when your organization’s AI initiative delivers something real. A process that runs faster. A decision made with better information. A customer experience that genuinely improves. That will be the moment people celebrate.
But it will only arrive because of everything that came before it. The data cleaned and organized. The governance model built and followed. The infrastructure invested in and connected. The teams supported through the hard work of preparation.
Nobody will watch that part, but it must be done and that should also be celebrated.
